1851 Sacramento City CA stampless to MO handstamp 80 rate XF 5396
Lovely, exhibit quality January 1851 stampless folded letter from Scaramento City CA to Independence MO. Red CDS and bold 80 cent rate handstamp (double the 40 cent transcontinental rate); neat short use only as far as the jumping off point to the west. With letter content from a husband (signed only with initials, JML) to his wfie, content includes reference that California is still rich in Gold I predict that great discoveries will be made this season, but oh I do long to be at home. I cna’t stay away much longer from my loving and beloved wife…. Second letter is also present to author’s mother with mostly chatter signed J. Langhorne but mentioning a new church in Independence and there is some business discussion of sellign some “negroes”. Interesting routing – although Indpendence was a key launchpad for overland trips west, this cover went by sea – carried by PMSS Panama from San Francisco Feb. 1st to Panama, then overland to Chagres and per Crescent City Feb. 25th to New York arriving Mar. 8th, back overland to Independence.
