FANTASTIC Civil War Blockade Ship letters 1864 USS Lackawanna off Galveston TX
The first letter is datelined U. Str Lackawanna Off Galveston Texas March 13, 1864. I’ve scanned the entire letter, which should be easily readable, but will highlight a few things. It is a highly interesting and descriptive letter, and I urge viewers to read it entirely. We left Pensacola last Tuesday and arrived here on Saturday, running some two hundred miles out of our course to chase three rebels that had every appearance of blockade runners, but no such good luck was our fate, they all proving to be legal traders.. Batteries to watch all their movement… Last evening, Magruder came down from some other part of King Jeff’s dominion to visit his faithful Texas subjects, and they made the grandest kind of a hulllaballoo about it… The Admiral (Farragut, presumably), has ceased the bombardment of Fort Powell, and it seems that it was only intended to attract the attention of the enemy while Gen. Sherman advanced on Mobile from the Northward, with a heavy column… The second is a partial 4 page letter, describing in detail the death and subsequent burial at sea of a beloved comrade. Here are a few passages. Please read the entire letter. One of our men, a down Easter and an old man-of-war’s man, m after years of constant service under our glorious flag – after passing through engagements to numerous to recall – through perils where at every steps death stood with open arms, and safe until now, was taken with yellow fever the day before yesterday, and died, after a few hours illness…. All hands bury the dead! Rang out the hoarse voice of a boatswains mate, and a messenger boy notifies us that all is ready. The officers and men are assembled on the quarter deck and through the bare headed crowd the body of poor Manning was borne to the gang way by his mates…. We commit this body to the deep, and at the words, the board was tilted and the body slid noiselessly into the sea. These are neat, well written letters, and are easy to transcribe.
