US#1 with a very rare and desirable Montfort, Wisconsin smalltown manuscript applied on 6/28/1851 on a two page letter from Reverand Ebenezer Willimas addressed to Reverend Benjamin Riley in Milwaukee. Riley refolded the letter and docketed a panel, which also states it was received on July 1, 1851. July 1, 1851 is significant from postal historians’ points of view because it is the first day of the universal three cent pre-paid rate. I doubt than Monfort, Wisconsin got any US#1s in stock, so this stamp was probably carried into town by the writer. The postmaster cancelled the stamp with a ” + ” which is not unusual and it is tied at left and at bottom. Riley refolded the letter, a vertical fold did go through the stamp. This is a unique item of Wisconsin postal history. The item “US#1 Montfort, Wisconsin Use 6/25/1851 2pg Reverand Ebenezer Willimas letter” is in sale since Saturday, November 25, 2017.
