Black manuscript Rated 12 1/2 to Erie Pennsylvania. 3 1818 – July 3, 1836 to Cleaveland where it was posted to Mr. Henry Clark, Erie, Pennsylvania. Original spelling for Cleveland, Ohio was Cleaveland and abbreviations of Cleav’d and Cleavel. Originally named for Moses Cleaveland, founder and surveyor of the city, for the Connecticut Land Company. Dateline on letter is Greenbay June 14th 1822. Interesting four (4) page letter addressed to Parents, My Friends and neighbors. Clark, arrives at Green Bay as an oarsman on another vessel. Buys passage to Grand River, Ohio by way of Cleaveland, Ohio. Grand River is a small Lake Erie port town 30 miles east of Cleveland. He writes about future travels up the Fox River through Winnebago Lake, overland portage and unto the Mississippi to New Orleans hoping to return to Green Bay the following year and eventually home. Being an oarsman was hard work as they were also working towlines to move their boats. These boats carried no sail. Wonder what happened to the young man.
