#11A – 3 cents 1851-57, George Washington, Type I, plated as 68R1L (noted on back), in a Dull Rose Red shade, with the rare Waterbury Connecticut Unofficial Roulette A new find! Clear roulette’s with portion of adjoining stamp at bottom. This stamp is the first in the census to have been used outside of Waterbury or nearby area (1 known from Hamburg, 1 known from New Haven, rest from Waterbury), this being a blue SOMERSVILLE, CT. Circular date stamp (CDS) – most likely used November 1x (fits within know time period). Fine and rare, fewer than ten off-cover examples are recorded. In an article in ” The 1851 Issue: A Sesquicentennial Retrospective “, pp. 144-148, published by USPCS, 2006, W. Wilson Hulme dates the device, based on shade and plate, to 1854, all are from Plate 1 Late, the roulette is spread far apart, leaving thin areas of the stamp still connected (see scans for representative images).
